#blackboyjoy
It’s the first day of Black History Month. Mindfully Capable Mom (and family) will be celebrating! Black History is 24/7/365, but we are allowed to be extra this month.
#oldiebutgoodie - My talented cousin designed the shirts and created my MCM logo! She's the best *wink*
If you don’t know me or if this is the first blog post you are reading, I am the mother of 2 beautiful black boys. I also suffer from anxiety and slight depression. Imagine for a moment, how I feel daily knowing my most important task in life is teaching my boys to be ‘black in America.’ Doing everything in my power to raise them with #blackboyjoy while the world will begin to see them as a threat as soon as they hit puberty. Teaching them that the power of their mind will be their greatest tool in life, but most won’t see past the color of their skin. I lose sleep over their well being. There isn't enough meditation or medication to ease this stress and angst.
Allow me to brag for a moment..
I want the world to know that these boys are special. Their hearts are the purest I’ve ever encountered (except when they are fighting with each other). Their smiles light up a room. I am always impressed with how intelligent they are. I’m convinced they are going to change the world for the better in some capacity. I'm not just saying that because they are my boys. I want them to be aware of all the great things Black people have accomplished in this world. They have to know that people that look like them have paved the way for them, this is why Black History shouldn't just be contained to 28 days. My boys are worth more than jewels, their lives are worth nourishing and protecting.
Just in their lifetime..
They were both born when a black man was president. They are both obsessed with the black man that portrayed a king with superpowers on the big screen. They both pressed the button on the voting ballot for the first black senator to represent the state of Georgia. They have both watched their favorite sport be dominated by black quarterbacks all while another black quarterback used his platform for good. I will not leave women out! They both watched a black woman be sworn in as vice president of the United States. This is all within their recent memory.
Another #oldiebutgoodie - Hubby puts these boys on his shoulders daily (figuratively of course, they are heavy). He is first generation to graduate from college. He is a wonderfully successful engineer. We also have a side business that the boys are always involved in. Celebrities can be great role models, but Hubby is the epitome of black boy joy!
The possibilities are absolutely endless. I root for anyone that is black, but you can bet your well-earned money that I will be the loudest in the room for my Kings. Happy Black History Month from the MCM!
XO,
